St. Luke's Peckham Weekly Newsletter 8

Weekly Newsletter 8

Greetings to everyone, we are in the  5th week of the Easter season and the 8th week of lockdown. We are at the stage where some of the restrictions are being relaxed on lockdown, however, caution is still needed and we are still to be aware of Social Distancing, washing hands regularly, and only going out if absolutely necessary. It’s great to be able to go out for exercise more often, but please do be safe.

I start this week’s Newsletter with a message from the Church of England regarding the latest guidance from the Government

Statement on latest Government guidance on Coronavirus (11/5/2020)

The Bishop of London, Sarah Mullally, said: “We note from the Government’s COVID-19 Recovery Strategy that churches could be open from July as part of the conditional and phased plan to begin lifting the lockdown. We look forward to the time when we are able to gather again in our church buildings.
"We are examining what steps we will need to take to do so safely and are actively planning ahead in preparation. We strongly support the Government’s approach of continuing to suppress the transmission of the virus and accordingly, we recognise that at this time public worship cannot return in the interests of public health and safety.”

FAITH AT HOME

The Church of England has released some material to help families to explore their Faith at Home.  It can be found at:www.churchofengland.org/faith-action/faith-home
There is also a range of materials on our Diocesan website at: https://southwark.anglican.org/cypmm/

ROGATION SUNDAY - ROGATE CHURCHES

This coming Sunday 17th May is Rogation Sunday, and in previous years we have travelled to visit our Link church and joined in the Rogate Village Walk, alongside Fr Edward and the people of Rogate. It is a shame, we cannot join them this year, but we have been asked to contribute to their service via Video recording. Please do pray for our Link Church, as we are all struggling during these difficult times. Hopefully, for next week’s Newsletter, I will have their service available to circulate.

ST LUKE’S REGULAR GIVING

We are thankful to all of you who donate to St Luke’s regularly, however, at this time it is just as important to continue your regular giving even if you cannot attend the Church building for worship. I would encourage those of you who normally donate via the collection plate or envelope to consider setting up a Standing Order, so that even when you are unable to attend you will still be contributing financially to the church, so we can continue the work in the community to build God’s kingdom. If you do wish to consider this form of donating the account details are:

DIOCESE OF SOUTHWARK FOOD ACCESS RESPONSE

Love thy neighbour. We are called to love our neighbour. There has been such an outpouring of support for one another amid these very difficult times when the Coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic is robbing people off their lives and others of their livelihoods. We are all caring for one another in many ways: from that phone call for a chat with a person who is self-isolating and might be living on their own, to those much-needed food parcels, all the way to sign-posting information to access such support.
The information provided in this resource encompasses assistance offered in the geographical area covered by the Diocese of Southwark, which covers South London and part of East Surrey.  We have done our utmost to include all already existing information on available support outside the scope of food banks in this resource.  Please bear in mind that we are in an evolving situation and some information in this document will become out of date and new information added.
We aim to update this resource as regularly as we can - download the full Food Access Response document, or visit the link below for information divided by borough. Food Access Response

CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE'S MISSION & MINISTRY
Email below is from Keli Bolton dated 13th May 2020
Good evening everyone,

This week finds me a little weary and looking for encouragement and hope from songs and scripture. Our ‘new normal’ brings waves of ‘yes I’m doing great’ followed by ‘today is a hard day’. In the chaos of life and where Psalm 23 just isn’t your lived experience at the moment, be encouraged to invest in yourselves by spending time with God, to find space in your day to rest (even if it’s just 10mins!) and to shower yourself with grace where you just can’t adult anymore for that moment. I’m praying for you.

Updated on the website today are the following sections – click on the links below to have a look if you need something:

  • Getting online

    • Ideas for activities on Zoom: DYM are offering free trial membership for 60 days

    • Positives and negatives for using Zoom for ministry (attached)

  • Young People – several resources added here around youth evangelism and discipleship. Four great questions asked by Dan Randall about young people and CV-19 (attached)

  • Anxiety, Mental Health & Trauma

  • Bereavement – talking to children about illness and death and doing it well – several resources added here

  • Toddlers

  • The London Prayer Marathon (attached) is coming up in June/July to pray for toddler groups. Here is the Facebook group. Here is the link for people to register their group online to get connected.

Take care, rest well and stay safe.

Kind regards,

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus.
Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, Thy Kingdom Come is going to look slightly different this year.
During the 11 days of Thy Kingdom Come, it is hoped that everyone who takes part will:

  • Deepen their own relationship with Jesus Christ

  • Pray for 5 friends or family to come to faith in Jesus

  • Pray for the empowerment of the Spirit that we would be effective in our witness

Let us Pray…. THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Almighty God,
who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ
have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life:
grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Have a blessed week

Weekly Newsletter 7

Greetings to everyone, we are in the  4th week of the Easter season and the 7th week of lockdown. I have been speaking to several of you over the past few weeks, and it is clear people are settling into the Lockdown, but still really miss meeting up with each other in person. Whilst it is difficult, we all know it has to be. From a personal point of view, I am at a stage where I am getting used to the lockdown, and in some ways enjoying speaking to people on the phone, on Zoom, etc, which did not always happen as much before. So some good is coming out of the lockdown.

For those who attended the Zoom service of Holy Communion on Sunday, or have listened to it afterwards, will have heard that my service was on what it means to have abundant life, and how for each of us it maybe something different. I’m hoping that despite the difficulties of living with Coronavirus around us, that you are able to live life to the best you can right now. Maybe not being able to do all you want, but hopefully you have all you need. As usual this Newsletter, will provide links where you can find resources for help in a variety of ways.
